So much has happened in the past month, it’s been a wonderful whirl. My December art show ‘Prairie Girl’ at Evanescence Gallery in High River, AB, was a huge hit with nearly 70 art fans in attendance. My fall workshops were all sold-out. And I was invited to participate in a new gallery’s small works show. Thanks to Midtowne Gallery in Calgary for welcoming my work!
For January, the changes just keep rolling in. I were surprised to find out I needed to find a new studio space for my Calgary classes. We’ll sure miss the old space, old friends & colleagues, but will be certain to keep in touch. And today, I found a great new ‘painting home away from home’ that I’ll begin teaching from on Thurs Jan 15. Introducing our new bright & spacious studio at Windsor Park Community Hall!
Located just north of Chinook Mall on 53 Ave SW, the hall has easy proximity from downtown and all quadrants of the city. What a lovely facility, and I’m very honored to have been welcomed into the new space. The huge bonus for me, is that the hall is right on a beautiful park space and is surrounded by charming community streets, beautiful mature trees and nature at it’s finest! What an inspiring space in which we’ll be able to paint and learn! Hop over to my Weekly Classes page for dates and details.
I also have more workshops coming up in Cochrane and High River! Please visit my Workshops page to get class descriptions and registration info. Thanks so much for reading, and I hope we’ll have the chance to paint together soon!

I started ‘Mellow Yellow, Pleasant Purple’ as a painting demonstration for the ‘Unfussy Florals’ class I taught last night. I finished it in my studio today. There was lots of fun and good-natured ribbing of the teacher in class (ahem!) because the lovely asters I thought we’d have so much fun painting turned out to be a pain in the keester! They were an unusual shade of purpley-pink, that absolutely defied recreation with our acrylics and oils! As such they became a good exercise in artistic license, and each of us created our own unique expression of the purple hues. Thanks ladies for coming to class, hope to see you again soon!
*Please note that as I create my paintings in oil, they require about 3-4 weeks to properly dry and cure before I can safely deliver them. Thanks so much for your understanding!
I’m excited to announce two more painting workshops set for this winter & spring. I’d love for you to join me:
Tues, Feb 26 – 6-9pm: Streetscapes
Most folks love streetscapes. But many are apprehensive to try painting them because of all that detail! We’ll explore ways to simplify them and still create pleasing compositions. Hint: It doesn’t always involve those teensy tinsy brushes!
Wed, Mar 20 – 6-9pm: Unfussy Florals & Foliage
Just in time for the first day of spring! Florals and foliage can easily become stiff, and lose their sense of natural liveliness. We’ll work on ways to depict the delicate freshness of the blooms, while balancing it with their fullness and volume.
Price per workshop: $35 plus GST
What to bring: pencils & sketchbook; art supplies; photo references or any still life objects you’d like to paint from
Located at: Atlantis Framing – 4515 Manhattan Rd SE, Calgary To register or for more info: Call Atlantis Framing at 403-258-0075 or me, Cheryl Peddie, at 403-270-9755
Thanks so much for reading – you all are yet another reason why I paint. Best, Cheryl.
Winter workshops begin! I still have some spaces open in my Interiors & Still Life workshop tonight. But if you miss it, there’s another one on Thurs Jan 31. We had a ball at my last one in November. Painting the Colors of Harvest & Autumn Wine & Cheese Workshop Tuesday Oct 23 – 6:00pm – 9:00pm POSTPONED DUE TO SNOW
Join Cheryl Peddie for a workshop painting the colors of fall. Designed for beginning students in acrylic and oil, we focus on creating a supportive, relaxed environment for new painters. When you’re painting from photo references, it is easy to become overly focused on trying to reproduce colors only as they appear in your photo. However this can result in paintings that lack the airy freshness and light of the landscape you remember experiencing. In this workshop, we’ll explore how to visualize, mix and integrate those experiential colors into your landscapes. We’ll also cover how to incorporate and build on the light and shadow patterns in your composition. Cheryl will also do demos on her own canvas throughout the evening to help illustrate the concepts being explored. Bring a variety of photo references of fall landscapes, plus your painting supplies.
Location: Atlantis Fine Framing Studio – 4515 Manhattan Rd SE Calgary (AB)
To register: 403-258-0075
Workshop fee: $35.00 plus GST
Door prize: Set of two framed mini-paintings by Cheryl Peddie
