‘In the Smallest of Places’ SOLD
24″ x 36″ oil on canvas

‘In the Smallest of Places’ was a challenge, and a delight to paint. These are flax blooms. If you’ve never seen them up close, their petals are utterly delicate, and their color is an ethereal, almost-undefinable blend of purple and blue. I spent many hours just sitting with the canvas, as I did with a brush in hand putting paint down. It was so important to consider how to convey their light, airy feel yet still show that as a group, they have volume and movement. The reference was taken at a friend’s cabin at Carpenter Lake, Montana. (Just northwest of Eureka) This lovely clump of flax was just on the edge of the deck and patio area. I got to watch over it every morning as I enjoyed my coffee and the morning sun.
