I’ve recently begun painting more works ‘Plein Air’ (just fancy talk for painting outside). It’s an approach to painting that is as rewarding as it is challenging.
There are many challenges in plein air painting! From sunburn, bug bites, dust, and bugs (again) ending up ‘decorating’ your canvas, to juggling your gear – clean-up rags, easel, canvas, brushes, pallette… it takes some trial and error to make it work well.
The advantages, however, make it all worthwhile. When painting outside, all the information you need is right there in front of you, in living color. You’re intimately in touch with the sensations and feelings you’re having by ‘being there’. This often makes it easier to translate those emotions onto your canvas. The result is often a spirited piece with great depth of feeling. CP
